The 13th edition of the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings by Subject 2023 was released on Wednesday, 22 March. The rankings cover 54 subjects, which are grouped into five broad subject areas. Data Science, History of Art and Marketing are the three new subjects that have been added this year for the purpose of ranking.

According to a press statement issued by QS, 44 programs across various disciplines offered by Indian higher education institutions have featured in the top 100 globally this year. In 2022, 35 Indian programs made it to the top-100. According to the release, Indian higher education institutions have performed well in the fields of computer science, chemistry, biological science, business studies and physics.
The five broad subject areas for which the ranking has been released are: Engineering and Technology, Arts and Humanities, Life Sciences and Medicine, Natural Sciences and Social Sciences and Management.

Five components were used to rank universities including academic reputation, employer reputation research citations per paper, h-index and international research network. The h-index is a way of measuring both the productivity and impact of a scientist’s or scholar’s published work. QS said that responses were taken from over 1,30,000 academics across the globe.
