The Indian Institute of Technology-Delhi has entered the list of top 50 institutes for engineering by subject 2023, which was released on Wednesday.
44 programs in various disciplines offered by Indian higher education institutions have been included in the top 100 globally. Last year, 35 Indian programs made it to the top 100.
A statement released by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) said Delhi University is the Indian university with maximum entries (27), followed by the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), Bombay, (25) and IIT-Kharagpur (23).
The rankings provide independent comparative analysis on the performance of over 15,700 individual programs taken by students at 1,594 universities in 93 locations around the world across 54 academic disciplines and five broad faculty areas.
66 Indian universities have been ranked in the thirteenth edition of the QS World University Rankings by subject, cumulatively receiving 355 entries, an increase of 18.7 percent over the previous year (299).
The 11 declared Institutes of Eminence (IoE) account for 44 per cent of the total Indian entries (158), the statement said.
The IoE boasts of 35 out of 49 top-100 Indian positions in 54 academic disciplines and in five broad faculty areas, the one featured in this edition.
For ‘subject ranking’, QS ranks institutions on the basis of individual programs and compares them with other programs in the world.
“For the 13th edition of the QS subject rankings, universities were ranked in five broad areas – engineering and technology, arts and humanities, life sciences and medicine, natural sciences and social sciences and management,” the statement said.
While the ranking covers 54 academic subjects, Indian higher education institutions have performed well in the fields of computer science, chemistry, biological science, business studies and physics.
Five-and-a-half years after the launch of India’s Institute of Excellence scheme, its universities have continued to improve rankings, with 70 percent of their entries increasing or remaining stable.
IIT-Bombay breaks into the world’s top 100 by securing 92nd rank in mathematics, up 25 places, and IIT-Kanpur ranks among the world’s top 100 in engineering-electrical electronics (87th, up 21 places) and computer science. Information Systems (96th, up 13 places).
While IIT-Kharagpur has moved up 15 places to be ranked 94th for Computer Science and Information Systems, IIT-Madras has moved up 50 places to be ranked 98th for Mathematics, the statement said.
In all, 66 Indian universities cumulatively received 355 entries, of which 44 courses in various disciplines are among the top 100 globally.
Indian higher education institutions are covered in 38 of the 54 narrow subject areas and all five in the broad subject areas, the statement said.
The most represented Indian universities in this edition of the ranking are Delhi University (27 entries), IIT-Bombay (25 entries) and IIT-Kharagpur (23 entries).
The QS ranking is based on various parameters such as research publications, academic reputation, employer reputation and h-index.
